Great Pumpkin Chase 5K and 1 Mile Walk in Soddy-Daisy to Benefit the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center

Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful, in conjunction with the City of Soddy-Daisy, are hosting the Great Pumpkin Chase 5K and 1 Mile Walk on October 15 at 8 a.m. All proceeds, after costs, will be donated to the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial.  The event will start and finish near Soddy-Daisy Fire House #2 at 11651 Dayton Pike.

The course is mostly flat, which makes it a great choice for those trying a 5K for the first time or for competitive runners looking for a fast time.  And those competitive runners should note that this is a certified 5K course.  According to Race Director Jim Stewart: “One of our goals is to make the 5K accessible to all, regardless of age or running ability.  Both runners and walkers are encouraged to join us.  For those not ready to commit to a full 5K, a 1 Mile Walk option is available. Also, we are inviting those who use handcycles, racing wheelchairs, or adaptive foot pedal bikes to join us. Children are also welcome for the 5K or 1 Mile Walk, but those 12 and under may prefer to participate in the Trick or Trot instead, which will be held immediately after the 5K and 1 Mile Walk. For the Trick or Trot, children will be grouped by age and will run a short distance on grass; costumes are encouraged, and all children will receive a prize.”

“We are so grateful to Keep Soddy-Daisy Beautiful and the Great Pumpkin Race sponsors and participants for supporting the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center,” shared Brittany Hennessee, director of breast services, CHI Memorial.  “Donations from our community help ensure women who are uninsured or under-insured are able to get this potentially life-saving breast cancer screening.”

The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center’s mobile mammography coach will be on site from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., making it very convenient for women to get their annual screening mammogram.  To schedule an appointment, call 423.495.4040.  Walk-ins are welcome.

Several top-level sponsors have stepped up to defray the costs of the 5K. They include Chattanooga Retina, Williamson & Sons Funeral Home, Gene-O & Dede Shipley, U.S. Water Heater Heating Solutions, Infinity Flux, and Rick & Catherine Nunley. In addition, the City of Soddy-Daisy will be providing police, fire, and public works support.

Whether or not you participate in the running/walking events, the public is invited to attend the Soddy-Daisy Fall Festival from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the same location. “Last year’s Fall Festival had over 1200 attendees, and we expect more this year, with the addition of the 5K, 1 Mile and Trick or Trot” notes Cindi Sanden, who is coordinating the event. “We are looking for more sponsors so that we can keep this event free for all attendees. Thank you to our initial top-level sponsors Parkridge Health System, Nature’s Solutions USA, and Yin Yang House.”
